Jesus Christ's Identification #1
By Revd 'Remi Tejumola
Mark 6:53-56
53 And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.
54 And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,
55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was.
56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.
All the people from the villages, cities, and country in our text were all looking for miracles and they knew that was what Jesus had to give, and He had plenty of 'em! When these people thought of Jesus, all they could imagine of Him was SOLUTION to all their needs.
The Cross
Before Jesus came along in life, people had myriad of problems and have had to live with them. Like many people today, they have considered that it is their lot to live with. Many people today believe that whatever the problem they are encumbered with is the cross which God had given them to bear - especially since that's what religious folks have preached to them. But what they were told was incorrect - actually it was the devil's lie to keep people in bondage, and it has succeeded!
It is because of such a misconception that a lot of preachers of the Gospel are against any emphasis about miracles, breakthrough, signs and wonders. Oh, my, they are against it. This is the reason people do not have any choice but be taken in by the false miracles from the devil since they cannot see the 'real ones' from the ministers of God. In the days of Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Jesus and His disciples people had a choice between the false and the real - people had their needs met, healing, miracles, and signs and wonders from God. Remember, Moses and the Egyptian magicians, Elijah and the Baal worshippers at Mount Carmel and so on.
When Jesus said, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me" (Matthew 16:23), He was not speaking about the problems of life (sickness, disease of all sort, barrenness, madness or any other kind of problems, got it?). 'Take up his cross' in this word meant "suffering for righteousness sake." "For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully" (1 Peter 2:19). 11 Peter 2:9, "(For that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds;) "
What kind of clarification did Jesus give John, the Baptist when he had doubts about Jesus real identity? Let's check this out:
Luke 7:19-23
19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
In other words, Jesus' answer to John the Baptist was, "If it was Me, miracles and the preaching of the Gospel are My trademarks!"
Question:
1. What kind of Jesus do you believe in, the impotent or Omnipotent?
2. What kind of Jesus have you been preaching about?
(While you are thinking about the questions, remember that there are lots and lots of people with real life problems out there).
